Portrait of a Palestinian Village: The Photographs of Hilma Granqvist (English)
By: Granqvist, Hilma / Seger, KarenShare

Language: English

Hardcover with Jacket

This book is a vivid evocation of life in a Palestinian village more than 80 years ago. The 226 pictures, most of which are published here for the first time, have been selected from a unique collection of over 1000 photographs taken by the Finnish anthropologist Hilma Granqvist. The photographs were taken during a period of three years in the 1920s white Dr. Granqvist was conducting research in the little Muslim village of Artas near Bethlehem. Her pictures provide an unusually intimate portrait of a Palestinian village at one moment in history.

More Information

The wide range of subjects covered by the photographs together with Karen Seger's informative text and captions, based on Dr. Granqvist's books and manuscripts, make 'Portrait of a Palestinian Village' a valuable record of a neglected aspect of Palestinian culture.
