Sayyed Mohammed Ahmad the Mahdi of Sudan had strictly followed teachings of Quran and Sunnah. His matchless sincerity was a guiding influence and almost instantly the grievously oppressed people gathered around him and wholeheartedly became his followers. The greatest menace of in vogue was the prodigious power of foreign rule, which had forced the half starved, and half naked people to become slaves. They were treated as beasts. The Mahdi had never claimed to receive divine revelation. He organized his people to throw off the shackle of foreign rule and infused in them the spirit of opposition against all forms of tyranny and injustice. For achieving freedom from foreign rule he stood like the rock not to be wind- shaken. This book is an episode of an Austrian colonel who, after loosing battle, decided to offer his submission to Sayyad Mohammed Ahmad Mahdi. «Fire and Sword in the Sudan,» by Rudolf Slatin, is an account from the author's point of view. Slatin was a very prejudiced person; therefore his narrative is full of hatred and dislike for the black race and Muslims, though he himself eventually embraced Islam on his own. Sayyad Mohammed Ahmad, unlike his brothers, studied Islamic law, science of Holy Quran and Hadith. He memorized the Holy Quran at age 7 from his blessed mother, Sayyeda Amna. His Fathers name was Abdullah. He spent many years doing vigorous Sufi practices and remained secluded doing zikr(commemoration of God) under the instructions of his Murshid (spiritual leader). As a Sufi, his intense commemoration lead him to behold the Holy Last Messenger (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) many times. He gathered followers with his fiery speeches and eventually declared war against foreign occupation of Sudan.
