The novel reconstructs the universally known Algerian love story of *Haiziya*—a tale immortalized in song by the vast majority of Algerian artists across every generation. The actual events of this story unfolded in the oases of the Ziban region during the second half of the 19th century. Following an extensive research endeavor spanning over three years—a process involving numerous journeys to the very sites where the events took place, as well as interviews with tribal elders and elderly women of the Saharan South who held historical proximity to the narrative—new truths came to light. Among these revelations was the discovery that Haiziya met a tragic end rather than dying a natural death. Furthermore, it was revealed that the poet Mohamed Ben Guittoun—who immortalized her in the magnificent elegy bearing her name—was, in fact, her true lover; his friend Saïd, contrary to popular belief, served merely as a literary and moral guise.
Khaled, the novel’s protagonist, embarks upon a perilous quest—much like a detective—to unearth the secrets concealed behind the story of Haiziya. In doing so, he lays before our astonished eyes the intricate details of a love story destined never to endure—a romance seemingly simple on the surface, yet profoundly complex in its depths, beneath which lie hidden layers of tribal and political strife, as well as mutual complicity with the French colonial regime.
